Week 3: Othermill - Acrylic
For this week, I tried to use acrylic on the Othermill. The first test I did was to create a gear knob for a missing part of my 3D printer, which is a knob on a hexagonal shape nut.
Note: In order to center layout multiple SVG files, it is necessary to select ‘use artboards’ option when exporting to SVG files in Illustrator.
Since the bit size limit the radius of the pointed corners, the center hexagonal shape did not get cutout properly. And for some reason, the edge is extreamly rough, compares to the other version I cut with lasercutter.
The other test I did is the two color smile. Also, both print did not get fully cut through, even after I changed and added the thickness of the material, it didn’t fully cut through.
Since the othermill didn’t fully cut through, so all the pieces left with really rough edges, I used multiple tools to get rid of them and sanding them. After I get a rather flat surface, I changed to the nail buffer blocks. The result is pretty smooth and shiny.
